The green vegetation is water hyacinth. Local merchants will harvest this plant and dry it out before turning it into wallets, bags, sandals, roofing materials, rope, and so forth. This plant is very versatile, and also rather invasive. The water hyacinth was actually brought into Vietnam from South America, where it grew unpleasantly plentiful. Although the hyacinth does have commercial use, it still poses as a pest.
